I Have A Goodly Heritage

I was cleaning my house today and for some odd reason I started thinking on my parents. Now if you are not one of those aformentioned parents then you may want to end right here because this may end up being a sappy entry. I was reflecting on some things that I, as a mom, hope to pass on to my kids. Being that I have 4 girls I realize that a bulk of how my kids turn out, as wives and mothers, will be a direct reflection of my parenting. I daily ask the Lord to blind my childrens' eyes from my failures and at the same time help me not to be a "fake". I know that these are the people who see me in my darkest moments and they are the ones who witness some of lifes greatest pleasures. They are precious to me! I began to ponder some of the things my parents passed on to me. Now, you should remember that I posted what my mom taught me a little while back and so I have compiled my own list of 10 things my dad taught me. Like I said if you are not him, you may not understand these things. If you do understand any or all of these, you must be one of my 8 brothers or sisters!

Dad taught me:

1.) To appreciate lifes lessons - in our family every experience, good or bad, was a life lesson! This is so ingrained in me that everything I go through is a life lesson.

2.) Not to fear hard work! I know that most jobs require alot of elbow grease but at the end of the day there is nothing like a job well done!

3.) Always do my best! See #2 However this has made me somewhat of an overachiever.

4.)Everything can be fixed with goop! Funny story but when dad told my husband we could fix a leak in our 5th wheel with Goop, he went out and found Goop! Only to find out that Goop to dad is like duct tape to the rest of the common world. He did not really mean Goop!

5.) How much fun it is to imitate Elvis and his "Blue Christmas" song. Whenever Christmas rolled around and dad and I were on our way to work we liked to sing this. Don't ask me why it was EARLY in the morning!

6.) Treat others kindly. When I worked with my dad I saw how he treated others. Even ignorant others. He was always very kind. He made me see "his walk talking."

7.) How to use power tools! For this I am ever so greatful and a d.i.y gal. My husband appreciates this too dad! It helped him get his cordless drill w/o an argument!

8.) It's not about quantity of time but quality! Dad was very busy working to provide for our large family but whenever he did have time we would do things like go to Yost Park and play hide-n-seek, or jump in the leaves or even going on service calls late at night. And who can forget MARINERS games?!!!!
9.) About knee slappers and classic moments! You have to be a Z to understand these

10.) Father always knows best!! See past blog for this one! Oh, and who do you think I called to ask why my 2 month old dryer wouldn't be drying my clothes?

OK, I'm married to a Pastor so this is the conclusion! *HAHAHAHAHA*
I Have A Goodly Heritage! I am so blessed! The Lord gave me a biological father that I only really know through stories and pictures and then He gave me this wonderful step-dad who I call "dad". (Of course I'm having trouble seeing my screen right now *sniff*). My dad and I have made so many wonderful memories and living in So. Cal. makes me miss my parents even more. The thing I am most thankful to my dad for is raising me in a Christian home. Every morning while I got up to get ready for school and then, when I was older, getting ready for work, my dad was sitting at the table reading his Bible. This memory is indelible. Thank you mom! Thank you dad and congratulations on 20 years! I have such wonderful memories and a Godly heritage to pass on to your grandkids!

These are the words from a song by the Blunkalls:

I may not have riches as some others may, but I have a mother who knows how to pray and maybe there are some things I've missed in my youth but I have a father who stands for the truth. I have a goodly heritage. I'm blessed with things you can't see. I have a goodly heritage and that is worth far more to me. And if in the future my parents pass on to dwell in that city we've come to call home they may not leave me the goods of this world but I will inherit their God and His Word. I have a goodly heritage. I'm blessed with things you can't see. I have a goodly heritage and that is worth far more to me.

Thank you Sileena for sharing your heart so openly. Dad & I cherish you so much, and of course you didn't make things easy for your younger siblings - it was hard not to have the same expectations of them as we had of you because you turned out nearly perfect!
May God continue to bless your efforts to be the best wife, mother, child, & friend you can be to those he has bestowed upon you.
WE LOVE YOU FOREVER Dad & Mom

That was a good post. We just heard the Petricks sing that a couple weeks ago.
